Taiwan's history is rich and complex, with influences from several different cultures. The island was inhabited by indigenous people for thousands of years before the Dutch and Spanish established colonies in the 17th century. After a brief period of Dutch rule, Taiwan became a part of China's Qing dynasty in 1683. Subsequent years saw Japanese rule, followed by a period of martial law under the Kuomintang (KMT) government. The martial law was lifted in 1987, and the country has since transitioned to a vibrant democratic system.
